“땅속의 시절을 끝내고 나무를 시작하는 죽순의 가장 큰 특징은 마디가 무척 짧다는 사실입니다. 

이 짧은 마디에서 나오는 강고함이 곧 대나무의 곧고 큰 키를 지탱하는 힘이 됩니다. 훗날 온몸을 휘어 

강풍을 막는 청천 높은 장대 숲이 될지언정 대나무는 마디마디 옹이 진 죽순으로 시작합니다. 모든 시작

하는 사람들이 맨 먼저 만들어내어야 하는 것이 바로 이 짧고 많은 마디입니다. 그것은 삶의 교훈이면서 

동시에 오래된 과학입니다. 여러분은 장대숲으로 자라기 위해서 짧고 많은 마디를 만들어내야 합니다. 

그리고 여러분들이 직면하게 될 숱한 어려움에 대비하기 위해서도 먼저 마디마디 옹이 진 죽순으로 시작

해야 합니다.”

A bamboo shoot has thickly knit nodes on it when it emerges out of the ground and begins to 

grow into a tree. The thickness of the nodes is the source of the strength of the straight and tall tree 

the shoot will grow into. The flexible strength of bamboo trees in a grove standing against the hard wind 

derives from the thickly knit nodes on the shoots.

It is these thickly knit nodes that you have to arm yourself with before you set out on a long journey. 

That is the teaching of life and also of age-old science. So as to grow into a tall tree and become 

a part of a magnificent grove, you need to have in you a plenty number of stout nodes. Those nodes 

which will prepare you against all kinds of difficulties you are to meet during the journey.(tr. by Orun Kim)

또다시 새로운 출발선에 선 3월,

마디마디 옹이 진 죽순을 떠올리며 마음을 견고하게 다잡아 봅니다.

그리고 뿌리가 마디마디 연결되어 서로를 강고히 지탱해 주는 청천 높은 장대 숲을 기약해 봅니다.
