장날이 오면 돈을 쥐지 못해도 그리 무겁지 않은 마음으로 장을 「보러」 갈 수가 있는 것이다. 

그래서는 고작 물이 진 생선 몇 마리를 들고 돌아오지만, 저마다 제법 푸짐한 見聞들을 안고 돌아오는 것이다. 

이 견문들은 오래 오래 화제에 오르내리며 무수히 반추되는 동안에 그것은 시골의 文化가 되어 간다. 

이 화려한 견문으로 해서 자신들의 빈한한 처지를 서러워하는 사람도 없지만 그 처지를 改造하려는 사람도 없다. 

싸고 좋은 물건이 많이 생산되어서 참 편리한 세상이 되었다는 사실이 비록 자신들과는 아무 관계가 없다고 하더라도 그것은 무척 기쁜 일이 아닐 수 없다. 이처럼 메마르고 자그마한 생활이지만 그들은 이것을 소(牛)처럼 되씹고 되씹어 반추함으로써 마치 흙내음처럼 결코 부패하지 않는 풋풋한 삶의 生氣를 마시며 살아가는 것이다.

When we go to the market, we say that we are going to "have a look at the market".  Villagers go to town on the market-day with light heart, without caring how much money they have in their pockets. On the way back, while only a string of small fish is carried in the market-looker's hands, an abundance of novel stories are carried in his mind. These stories, after being repeated among the villagers for numberless times, become part of the village culture. The glorious contents of the stories do not make the villagers feel sorry about their humble way of life. Even if the increase of cheap and useful commodoties falls short of affecting their own lives, it is a good piece of news all the same, that the world is becoming a more comfortable place. However simple and poor their way of life may be, they keep chewing and rechewing it like cattle, and extract from it fresh vitality for their lives. 지난해 본의 아니게 잘 뚫린 서울을 향해 난 길을 따라 나들이들 자주 했다. 

한 낮에 들어가 깊은 밤에 돌아 나오는 여정은 곧은길 덕분이었다.

그래서 시골은 더 이상 서울의 최고 높은 빌딩을 봤니 못봤니 하는 문제로 다투는 그 시절의 시골이 아니다. 

고작 물이 진 생선 몇 마리가 손에 들린 전부일지라도, 푸짐한 견문을 안고 돌아와 반추하며 

흙내음처럼 풋풋한 생기를 불어 넣는 삶이 있는 장터의 시골을 시골사람이 그리워한다.
